Business as usual in our globally interconnected food system will not bring us food security and
environmental sustainability. Several converging threats – from climate change, population
growth and unsustainable use of resources – are steadily intensifying pressure on humanity and
world governments to transform the way food is produced, distributed and consumed.

Over the ages, human societies have altered local ecosystems and modified regional
climates. Today, the human influence has attained a global scale. This reflects the
recent rapid increase in population size, energy consumption, intensity of land use,
international trade and travel, and other human activities. These global changes have
heightened awareness that the long-term good health of populations depends on the
continued stability and functioning of the biosphere's ecological, physical, and
socioeconomic systems.
The world's climate system is an integral part of the complex of life-supporting
processes. Climate and weather have always had a powerful impact on human health
and well-being. But like other large natural systems, the global climate system is
coming under pressure from human activities. Global climate change is, therefore, a
newer challenge to ongoing efforts to protect human health.
This booklet is a summary of the book Climate Change and Human Health - Risks
and Responses, published by WHO in collaboration with UNEP and WMO. The
complete volume seeks to describe the context and process of global climate change,
its actual or likely impacts on health, and how human societies and their governments
should respond, with particular focus on the health sector.

Training materials
Standard as well as customised materials were developed for regional workshops on climate change mainstreaming. Workshop participants and partner governments interested in replicating this kind of workshop at the national level can reuse these materials, in full or in part, provided the source is adequately acknowledged. Specific attention should be paid to adequate referencing of any third-party materials (e.g. graphs, tables, figures, pictures) included in these training materials, and specific authorisation should be obtained from the owners of such third-party materials for any use in publications, including web-based publishing.
Word versions of the handouts and PowerPoint versions of the slides can be obtained on request via info@gcca.eu.

Global Invasive Species Compendium (ISC), developed by the Commonwealth Agricultural Bureau International (CABI). This resource is the most extensive and authoritative compilation on the subject in the world. Invasive species are a major threat to the global economy and the environment, costing billions of dollars to control each year. Pacific Island countries need to be extra vigilant against introduced pests as they can drive native species to extinction. The ISC provides a detailed coverage of invasive species threatening livelihoods and the environment worldwide.
Organised by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and SPC, the workshop is being held at Novotel, Lami. It will review the ISC, which is freely available and open source. The European Commission is a major funding partner. The ISC is an online (www.cabi.org/isc), comprehensive encyclopaedic reference work covering recognition, biology, distribution, impact and management of the world’s invasive plants and animals.

‘Owning Adaptation in the Pacific: Strengthening governance of climate adaptation finance and effective use of climate resources’
A presentation by Sarah Meads from Oxfam
Pacific communities face no option but to adapt if they are to build a resilient future to climate change impacts. But what are Pacific country experiences and challenges of accessing and using climate finance for adaptation? And how can these be improved?
To gain a better understanding, a new research report, Owning Adaptation in the Pacific: Strengthening governance of climate adaptation finance, looks in detail at Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and Tonga and calls for a focus by all actors to support the Pacific region to build adaptive capacity across government and non-state sectors. Key findings of this project will be presented as well as discussion of the over 60 specific actions and strategies identified by Pacific governments, civil society, donors and inter-governmental agencies involved in the project, and from other sources.
