Training of Trainers for VITE on climate change

Training of Trainers for lecturers of the Vanuatu Institute of Teachers Education (VITE) including the In-service Unit (ISU) and curriculum officers of the Vanuatu Ministry of Education and Training (MoET) on teaching climate change.

Vanuatu currently experiences severe impacts of climate change, and the national government has prioritized non-formal education as a critical focus.  Accordingly the Vanuatu Rural Development Training Centre Association (VRDTCA) is developing a stand-alone CC & DRR training module which will form a mandatory part of training programs.

Many climate change and disaster risk reduction teaching and learning materials are now available in the Pacific region; SPC/GIZ/AusAid Key Messages and Learning Outcomes on CC & DRR (second draft), SPC SOPAC Hazard in the Pacific Factsheets, USP PACE-SD Factsheets on CC, Country Profiles (PCCSP Climate Change Projections), IPCC Reports, SPC/GIZ/PACCSAP Learning about Climate Change the Pacific Way, a picture-based education resource and many others.

Unfortunately, there is often little consistency and/or coordination among the training institutions despite of the fact that many development partners are teaching and training on these issues. Furthermore, these CC & DRR programs are often not fully accredited by national training authorities.

In response, the SPC Community Education Training Centre (CETC) with the SPC/GIZ’s Coping with Climate Change in the Pacific Island Region (CCCPIR) Program and the University of the South Pacific, Pacific Centre for Sustainable Development of the Global Climate Change Alliance Program (USP PACE SD GCCA) have developed a ‘Training Module on Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management in Community Development’. This regional module was adapted and extended to seven units of competencies to suit the Vanuatu context.

The new training package on climate change and disaster risk reduction was developed and trialled with support from SPC/GIZ CCCPIR and consists of seven units of competencies as requested by the Vanuatu Industry Advisory Committee and VRDTCA.  It suits the Vanuatu national and local context and specific industry needs and is designed as a Certificate I, Level 1 of NTQF specifically for Vanuatu communities, being available in English and French. The SPC USP EU PacTVET project wishes to trial this Module via a training of trainers.

To fulfil the learning goals of the new Vanuatu Curriculum, training packages for officers of the Curriculum Development Unit (CDU) of the Vanuatu Ministry of Education and Training (MoET), and for lecturers at the Vanuatu Institute of Teacher Education (VITE), including its In-service Unit (ISU), were developed with support from SPC/GIZ CCCPIR on how to utilise new climate change adaptation education resources. These include SPC/GIZ/PACCSAP’s Learning about Climate Change the Pacific Way, SPC/GIZ CCCPIR’s Pou and Miri books and the Cloud Nasara animation from the Pacific Australian Climate Change Science and Adaptation Programme (PACCSAP). The new training packages include training guides, teaching materials and proposed lesson plans for each resource.
