Vanuatu Klaemet Infomesen blong Redy, Adapt mo Protekt (Van-KIRAP) workshop

The Vanuatu Meteorology and Geohazards Department (VMGD) are conducting a four-day workshop in collaboration with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP).

The Vanuatu Klaemet Infomesen blong Redy, Adapt mo Protekt (Van-KIRAP) workshop aims to increase the ability of decision makers, communities and individuals to plan and respond to the long and short term impacts of climate variability and change across five target sectors – Agriculture, Fisheries, Water Sectors, Infrastructure and Tourism.

Informative presentations were delivered at the VMGD Conference room by CSIRO Team Leader, Dr Geoff Gooley, VMGD Climate Division Manager Allan Rarai and Van-KIRAP Project Manager Moriah Matou on Tuesday.

Dr Gooley reported that with the assistance of CSIRO technical experts in areas of Climate Change and Science from Australia, they will be working with sector partners on how to better adapt to Climate Change impacts.

“Vanuatu is presently experiencing evident impacts of Climate Change in the longer term,” said Dr Gooley.

“With reports of various changes in climate, extreme weather events driven by Global Warming, our team will be working with each five sector, with new ways of obtaining scientific data and resources that local stakeholders will use to understand how to adjust to the changing climate.”

The workshop is funded by Van-KIRAP, SPREP and the Green Climate Fund (GCF).
