IFPRI Climate Change Strategies for Coastal Communities: Final Regional Workshop

We are writing in reference to the “Climate Change and Development Strategies for Coastal Communities of the Pacific Coral Triangle Countries” project, an undertaking that brings together the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), Washington DC, USA and the national research (climate change, environment, fisheries and other related areas) systems, provincial governments and coastal communities in the four countries of Pacific Islands namely, Fiji Islands, Solomon Islands, Timor Leste and Vanuatu. As you are aware, this project is under the umbrella program of the Asian Development Bank Technical Assistance 7753 on “Strengthening Coastal and Marine Resources Management in the Coral Triangle of the Pacific (Phase 2)”.

This research has two objectives: 1) to assess the development strategies for the Pacific coral triangle countries in response to future and projected impacts of climate change on the key coastal and marine resources, with emphasis on the population dependent on the coastal and marine resources of the coral triangle; and 2) to carry out a study on the economic impacts of climate change adaptation strategies on households dependent on coastal and marine resources, and identify alternative  development strategies for coastal communities in the coral triangle Pacific countries using the results of the economic analysis.  The project is being implemented in collaboration with national research institutions in the four Pacific Island countries as well as the provincial government offices, fishers groups and other community associations in the coastal villages of Ra Province (Fiji), Isabel Province (Solomon), Atauro Island (Timor Leste) and Sanma Province (Vanuatu).  It was initiated in October 2011 with completion date of October 31, 2013.
