Greetings!

 

We are pleased to inform you that the study on Climate Change and Development Strategies for Coastal Communities of the Pacific Coral Triangle Countries implemented by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) under the ADBTA 7753 on Strengthening Coastal and Marine Resources Management in the Coral Triangle of the Pacific funded by the Asian Development Bank is on its final stages of research activities.  The study has an expected completion date on October 31, 2013. 

 

As a refresher, IFPRI initiated its research activities in Vanuatu on the ground since February 2012.  IFPRI team, together with staff from the Department of Environmental Protection and Conservation visited Siviri, Efate Province and Luganville, Santo Island where they conducted a Multi-stakeholder Workshop, met with Officers from various provincial offices and carried out focus group discussions (FGD) involving a wide range of stakeholders – fishers, farmers, provincial government officers, NGO, among others in the coastal villages of Siviri in February 2012 and in Luganville during August and October 2012. 

 

IFPRI team has collected data from primary (FGD) and secondary sources (using relevant literatures) and currently undergoing analysis for modeling projections using standard economic models.  As part of the modeling exercise, IFPRI team (led by Dr. Madan Dey with assistance from Bing Valmonte-Santos) would like to present the preliminary modeling results to the national experts of Vanuatu. 

 

IFPRI in association with the Department of Environmental Protection and Conservation, Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, Vanuatu, would like to invite you to participate in the post-survey validation research activity on Monday, June 17, 2013, from 9am-4pm in The Melanesian Hotel, Port Vila.  The objectives of this meeting are:

 

1.      To review and present IFPRI’s study in the Pacific coral triangle countries as refresher;

2.      To present the preliminary modeling results including adaptation strategies at national level;

3.      To solicit feedback on the assumptions and outcomes/projected fish production and demand; and

4.      To briefly present national development plans and policies related to climate change and the fisheries sector at the national level.

 

Furthermore, as part of IFPRI’s modeling exercise, Madan will be presenting the preliminary results and baseline data, i.e., the national data on production, consumption and trade based on various secondary sources that we have used in the model.  It will be helpful if you could kindly bring any national data and reports on the fisheries sector which you might have for comparison purposes.   Reports and other documents on climate change policies related to the fisheries sector are likewise useful.

 

The meeting is informal and we strongly encourage discussions throughout particularly when the preliminary results of the modeling exercise are presented.
