As you know, AECOM has been engaged under the auspices of the Pacific Australia Climate Change Science and Adaptation Planning program by the Australian Department of Environment to develop a case study of the application of cost benefit analysis to inform adaptation decision making in Vanuatu.
The focus of this case study will be on low lying coastal settlements and critical infrastructure.
The objective of the project is to assist the Government of Vanuatu to make more informed decisions to reduce current disaster risk and future climate risk, using cost-benefit analysis.
We will use CBA analysis within the climate risk management framework for delivering this project and will make every effort to build the capacity of in-country stakeholders interested in utilising this tool for future adaptation planning. It will provide hands-on training in the use of CBA in making decisions about CCA, building on recent generic CBA training conducted by SPREP, GIZ and SPC.

We are looking forward to developing a strong partnerships with key stakeholders, to enable strong collaboration, ownership of project outcomes and facilitate access to existing studies, data, context and information.
Given GIZ’s active role in the area of climate change in Vanuatu, I am looking forward to exploring how best we could leverage off your valuable work, as well as explore your thoughts on how best to deliver on this project effectively.
On Monday, 27th January, as you may already know there will be a meeting of the NAB, starting at 9 am, when the AECOM team will make a presentation to seek their support and advice.
During this trip and with the help of the NAB members and other stakeholders we hope to:
- Confirm the selection of a coordinator (s)
- Select a case study location focussing on low-lying coastal communities and critical infrastructure
- Identify and access key published and grey literature about climate change management
- Access key data and information required for CBA of CCA
